POWDER COATING

THE ADVANTAGE OF POWDER COATING VS OTHER APPLICATIONS

Better protection. Powder coating can produce a much thicker finish than conventional liquid coating without running or sagging. Often it is twice as thick as wet painting methods and has a proven track record against chips and scratches.

Consistent finish. Powder coated items offer a far superior finish with a very consistent appearance compared to using wet painting methods. This is largely due to the application of powder paint, as it is a lot easier to create an even coating. Wet paint finishes are reliant on the skill of the technician and gravity often takes effect to create drips or uneven areas.

Flexible finish. A huge advantage to powder coating is its ability to bend. For example, it's ideal for the transport industry where products are subject to twisting.

Any size. Powder coating can be applied on any item big or small from a tiny nail to a huge structure. As long as it fits in our oven and holds an electric charge, it can be powder coated.

Environmentally friendly with fewer chemicals. The powder used in powder coating does not contain harmful chemicals like solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOC) which most wet paints contain. Additionally, when excess powder paint falls to the floor it can simply be swept up and reused, unlike wet paints.

The Process

Powder Application. Powder paint is applied with the use of an electrostatic gun which sprays the powder paint out and on to a metallic surface. The powder paint is given a positive electric charge when it is shot out the end of the gun, while the metallic surface remains grounded and retains a negative charge. This ensures paint particles stick to the surface of the object in a uniform way to ensure a consistent finish.

Curing. Once the polymer based powder paint is on the items it is then exposed to elevated temperatures in one of our ovens. The powder paint chemically reacts to form a higher molecular polymer resulting in a stronger linked structure. This curing process is known as Crosslinking and requires a certain temperature for an exact amount of time. An average powder cures at 200oC for 10 minutes however this changes depending on the paint, its thickness and even the properties of the object being painted.

Powder Coating Requirements

1. The material must be metal capable of holding an electric charge. Common materials painted include steel, iron or aluminum.

2. The maximum size we can process is 6m x 2m x 2.2m due to the size of our ovens.
